LLM Citations and Organic Traffic: What You Can Measure Today
What a mention in an AI answer can mean for your traffic, what SEB Pulse checks, and how to measure the effect with your own Search Console and Analytics data.
Key Points
- Clear, well-structured, authoritative pages help with both search rankings and AI answers — classic SEO is still the foundation.
- Visits from AI assistants that link to their sources show up in Google Analytics as referrals from the assistant's domain.
- A brand mentioned in AI answers may see more branded searches — watch your branded queries in Search Console.
- SEB Pulse checks whether ChatGPT names your brand for five questions about your field, and where and in what tone it does.
The New Traffic Source
As AI assistants answer more questions directly, a fair question is whether being mentioned in their answers turns into real traffic. GrowSEB has not run a study that measures this, so this page sets out what you can check for yourself.
Two effects are worth watching: direct visits from assistants that link to their sources, and people who see your brand in an answer and then search for it by name.
Measuring It on Your Own Site
Referral visits from AI assistants appear in Google Analytics under the referring domain, and branded searches appear among your queries in Search Console. Compare both over time against the changes you make to your content.
SEB Pulse covers the other half of the picture: it asks ChatGPT five questions about your field and records whether each answer names your brand, where in the answer, and in what tone. It doesn't check Gemini, Claude or Perplexity yet, and it doesn't track citations of individual pages or the traffic they send.
Methodology
This is a guide, not a data study. SEB Pulse checks ChatGPT (OpenAI's GPT-4o mini) only; it does not monitor Gemini, Claude or Perplexity, citations of individual pages, or traffic.
