Outreach is the bridge between great content and backlinks. Even the best content won't earn links if nobody knows it exists. This lesson covers how to craft outreach that actually gets responses.

Finding Outreach Targets

Use SEB Outreach and SEB Link Intel to identify prospects:

  • Sites linking to competitor content similar to yours
  • Sites that have linked to your content before (warm contacts)
  • Resource pages and "best of" lists in your niche
  • Journalists and bloggers who cover your topic area

The Perfect Outreach Email

Subject Line

Keep it short, specific, and non-spammy. Reference their content: "Quick question about your [article topic]" or "Resource for your [page title]".

Opening

Show you actually know their work. Reference a specific article or point they made — this proves your email isn't mass-blasted.

Value Proposition

Explain what you've created and why their audience would benefit. Focus on their audience's needs, not your desire for a link.

The Ask

Be clear but not pushy. "Would you consider linking to this as a resource?" or "I thought your readers might find it helpful."

Follow-Up Strategy

  • Wait 5-7 days before following up
  • Send a maximum of 2 follow-ups
  • Each follow-up should add value, not just repeat the ask
  • Accept silence gracefully — not everyone will respond

What NOT to Do

  • Mass-blast identical emails to hundreds of contacts
  • Offer link exchanges ("I'll link to you if you link to me")
  • Be vague about what you're offering
  • Email people with no relevance to your content
  • Follow up aggressively or take rejection personally

Response Rate Benchmarks

Good outreach campaigns see 5-15% response rates and 3-8% link placement rates. If you're below 3% response rate, your emails need work. If you're above 15%, you're doing excellent targeting and personalization.

Key takeaway: Successful outreach is personal, valuable, and respectful. Research each prospect, focus on their audience's needs, and make linking to your content the obvious choice.
